Group Accommodation in Whatstandwell

The unusually named Whatstandwell, about five miles from Matlock, is set in a thickly wooded section of the Derwent Valley tucked away from the main road and railway and almost hidden from view apart from the railway station, the hotel and bridge. It is a great place from which to explore the Cromford Canal, which used to carry goods from the nearby mills to Manchester, Nottingham and Derby. The tow paths make great places for walking or cycling.
There have been several attempts to trace the origin of the name, Whatstandwell, but most now seem to agree that it was named after Walter Stonewall. At the time when the bridge was built in 1391, Walter (or Wat) Stonewall rented a cottage where the bridge was constructed, which was mentioned in the agreement with the landowner.
The village is a sleepy collection of grey stone cottages and makes the perfect base from which to explore this part of the Peak District in Group Accommodation.
